THE ALL ENGLAND KOI SHOW 2021 RESULTS

Although we have been forced to cancel our last three Shows, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm to get The All England Koi Show back on the road. Over thirty members of the South East Koi Club met early at The Kent County Showground, Detling on Wednesday, prior to the Show – all ready for action!

This was our 34th Open Show and although we have had a break since the last Show, everyone knew what to do. Prior to the Show we had agreed to purchase more fibreglass Show vats, and Paul, from Denby Koi Ponds, was soon on site delivering the first batch.

The ironwork above the vats was erected, and just after lunch all the vats were in position, air lines were being fixed and we started filling the vats which continued for the rest of the day and over night. By Thursday lunchtime the major part of the work was completed and it was just a case of sorting out a few cosmetics.

As always, water quality is paramount to ensure the safety of our Koi and was supervised by David Edge, Bsc, PhD, with the aid of our digital photometers which deliver accurate readings. This year we received a surprise from Burtons Aquatic Systems who presented us with a superb stainless steel unit which they had made specially for us to hold our glass water testing tubes.

The Koi Dealers started arriving – all our regular Koi Dealers and equipment manufacturers that we all know, and some new to our Show. It was a very busy day as exhibitors were bringing in their Koi for benching too. While all this was going on we put the final touches to the Show and displayed a number of JPD Premium Koi Food banners along each aisle to promote our Main Sponsor around the Show.

By the end of Friday 338 Koi had been benched and everything was ready to go.

On Saturday morning our team of Judges arrived and after taking refreshments, split into 3 teams and began the process of judging the Koi in the Show. They stopped for lunch, then continued judging – completing the task during the evening. Judging our Show is a lengthy, tiring process. The South East Koi Club would like to thank the Judges who professionally judged our Show: Allan Tait, Carol McCall, Tony Sheffield, Keith Bertie, Anthony Grey, Gary Hazely and Niko Bellens.

The Show continued on Sunday morning when the exhibitors checked their results which were displayed above the Show vats. Meanwhile, visitors to the Show meandered around the Koi Dealers’ stands, searching for a bargain. After calling the raffle, where many prizes had been generously donated, the presentations were made on Sunday afternoon.

Our sponsors which included Walcot Koi and A4Koi who jointly sponsored the South East Koi Club’s Show Fleeces. Our main Sponsor JPD Premium Koi Food generously supplied Koi Food to all the winners and South East Koi Club members who helped to erect and take down the Show. In addition, all the Major Award winners were presented with luxurious Japanese painted plates sponsored by Burtons Aquatic Systems, Fish Treatment Ltd, Koi Health & Pond Care, Gloucester Bag Company, EZ-Pond and A4Koi. Glass trophies were presented to the winners in each Best in Size category.

A Special Award – The Ron Rance Trophy was presented to Andy Baker. This Trophy was in honour of our dear departed friend, Ron, who I met in 1983, and was a dedicated member of the Club. The Trophy was originally presented to Ron by one of our International Judges, Hongman Leung, as a Friendship Trophy and it features two carp in an ancient green glaze. After Ron’s demise his family presented it to the Club and we keep Ron’s memory alive by presenting it annually to the Best Sanke entered by a Club member.

With the presentations completed, the exhibitors netted their Koi and carefully packed them for the journey home.

We would like to thank Liam Bess, our Official Photographer who produced a superb photographic record of our Show and has kindly allowed us to use the photos in Koi Net magazine and to promote our Club.

In addition to his photographic talent Liam produces an online Koi blog – www.worldofnishikigoi.com
